Soil compaction control

A static plate test or a static punch test is one of the field test methods to evaluate possible ground deformations under load. A round or square plate is used for the test, which is periodically subjected to increasing loads, thus assessing the resulting degree of soil sedimentation, which is determined by the increasing loads.plate testing in wells;

SEVERAL MODIFICATIONS OF THE STATIC TEST:

  • screwing the static plate into the ground block;
  • test by screwing the static plate below the wellbore;
  • plate test in trench;
  • plate test in other open excavations (e.g. foundation pit).

In static plate tests, the plate is used in pits, boreholes and excavations, as well as the equipment and devices for its flushing, which measure the sediment of the plate, often called a punch. The plate itself can be metal, reinforced concrete or concrete, up to 50mm thick if the plate is metal, and 100-200mm thick if the plate is made of concrete or reinforced concrete.

Screw plates can also be used in the ground, in the wells below the mapping site. It is a steel tube with a slightly curved disc at the bottom. This method is especially popular because there is no need to dig a trench.

DATA OBTAINED DURING THE TEST

The static plate test provides reliable and accurate soil compression indices with a wide range of applications, but in most cases the data are particularly important in the design of foundations.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF STATIC TESTING?

Compared to laboratory tests that determine the deformation properties of the soil, static plate tests are considered to be the most reliable. It is therefore not surprising that they are also one of the most popular in the world.

Another advantage of the static plate test is that when laboratory samples cannot be taken due to water content or other physical properties of the soil. In this case, when the need arises to study soil deformations, a static plate test will be one of the most reliable solutions out of just a few alternatives.

DYNAMIC PLATE TEST

The dynamic plate test or the dynamic punch test is a field research methods that allows a quick assessment of the compaction quality of earthworks and road bases. It is particularly applicable  where it is known exactly how and to what extent the soil was compacted. What is the principle of this test? A plate with a rod is placed on the base, above which is a hammer. The latter is falls, and the deposition of the plate in the soil is measured using special devices, and the compaction of the soil is assessed accordingly.

WHEN IS THE DYNAMIC PLATE TEST USED?

This method is  a very good choice when it is necessary to quickly determine whether the prepared surface is suitable for the structures to be installed at the site, such as roads, railways, viaducts, tunnels, airport runways, etc. The dynamic plate test also identifies how the loads act on the soil in that area. The unreliability of the test results with the parameters of the surface requirements is a shortcoming of this method.

The dynamic plate test is suitable for coarse-grained substrates with a minimum particle size of up to 0.63mm.

The test can be performed on a dynamic plate with a layer of soil up to 0.3-0.5cm thick.

OTHER SERVICES PROVIDED BY GEO ENGINEERING:

  • Soil drilling. A study to identify  a soil, determine the layer boundaries, take samples of it, provide information on its composition, groundwater, etc.
  • Static probing. The most popular and one of the most economical methods of geological research, extremely useful in assessing the mechanical properties, type, strength of the soil and accurately determining the layer boundaries.
  • Dynamic probing. Not as accurate as static, but irreplaceable when working with particularly coarse or particularly strong soils, or in hard-to-reach areas. This method is characterized by its speed, it is useful in determining the mechanical properties of the soil, the layer boundaries in the design and installation of roads, railways and other infrastructure.
  • Soil compaction control. A study that will help to accurately assess the degree and quality of soil compaction.
  • Soil laboratory tests. A study of the physical and mechanical properties of the soil, its composition, strength and deformation characteristics.
  • Excavation and description of pits. A method to assess the condition of the foundations of an existing structure and the soil beneath them if very high class soil samples need to be taken.
